FROSTED SOFT
SUGAR COOKIES
(LOFTHOUSE DUPES)
Ingredients
For the cookies:
1 stick (½ cup) butter, softened
½ cup sour cream
1 cup sugar
1 large egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
½ teaspoon almond extract
(optional)
3-4 cups all-purpose flour
¾ teaspoon baking powder
½ teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon cornstarch
¼ teaspoon salt
For the frosting:
1 stick (½ cup) butter
½ teaspoon vanilla extract
2 cups powdered sugar
2½ Tablespoons milk
Food coloring (gel-based) and
sprinkles (optional)
Directions
Combine 3 cups of flour,
salt, baking powder,
baking soda and
cornstarch in a bowl.
Whisk together and set
aside. Reserve 1 cup of
flour to add at the end.
In a separate bowl,
cream the butter and
sugar until fluffy. Beat in
the egg, vanilla extract
and almond extract (if
using). Add the sour cream
and mix until combined,
scraping the bowl as
needed.
Add the flour mixture
to the wet ingredients
and mix on low until just
combined and fluffy. Use
a spatula to scrape down
the bowl and incorporate
any remaining flour.
Shape the dough into a
disk, cover in plastic wrap
and chill for 30 minutes to
an hour.
Preheat the oven to
375°F (190°C). Roll the
dough into 1- to 1½-ounce
balls and place them
2-3 inches apart on
parchment-lined baking
sheets. Flatten each ball
with the flat bottom of a
drinking glass to ¼-inch
thick disks.
Bake at 375°F for 8-9
minutes, or until the
cookies are just turning
color on the bottom
edge. Set aside to cool
completely.
Prepare frosting:
While the cookies bake,
cream the butter for the
frosting. Slowly mix in
the powdered sugar and
vanilla extract. Drizzle in
the milk while mixing on
low speed, then increase
to high speed and beat
until smooth. If using food
coloring, add a drop at a
time until the desired color
is reached.
Once the cookies are
cool, top each with a thin
layer of buttercream and
a sprinkle of your favorite
decorations.
Tips:
For a festive touch, use
seasonal sprinkles or food
coloring to match holidays
and special occasions.
Make sure the cookies
are completely cool before
frosting to prevent the
frosting from melting.
