L

arry Michael Rockind
died July 25, 2024,
surrounded by his
loving family, just a month
after celebrating his 80th
birthday with them.
When Larry moved to
Oak Park at age 14, he went
ice skating and
met the love of
his life, Gladys
(Reinstein), and
they’ve been in
love ever since.
They went
to Oak Park
High School
and the University of
Michigan together, and
then were happily married
for 58 years. Best friends
and partners in every way,
from traveling the world
to running marathons and
taking Hebrew lessons
together for 30 years;
people lovingly called
them “Glarry” well before
celebrities joined names.
He loved his family
with his whole heart:
Gladys; their children,
Neil (Karen), Sandy
and Carin (Joshua);
grandchildren, Aliya, the
late Harley, Jaden, Mitzi,
Shay and Leora; his sisters,
Marcia (the late Stanley)
Freedman and Shelly
(Michael) Gordon; many
nieces and nephews; his
beloved caregiver, Johnny
Brillantes.
Larry was a passionate,
creative, talented, funny
and loving man. He had
several great loves: Gladys,
their family, Judaism,
architecture, Miami, Israel
and Michigan football.
He could be found with a

Starbucks in hand all day
and was known for telling
stories and making slide
shows about his travels.
He loved taking his family
on driving trips to Florida
every year. The family
made an infamous driving
trip out west with Larry
insisting on stopping at
every scenic stop.
He designed many
prominent buildings
throughout Metro Detroit,
including Adat Shalom
Synagogue and Dorfman
Chapel; and he was known
for his timeless modern
perspective. He also taught
architecture at Lawrence
Technological University.
Throughout his life,
he gave tirelessly to the
Jewish community, serving
as past-president of
Congregation B’nai Moshe
and on the local and
national boards of United
Synagogue of Conservative
Judaism (USCJ). He was
a beloved member of
Congregation Shaarey
Zedek.
Larry and Gladys’ love
story is a living legacy. He
lives on through his family,
his architecture and the
hilarious memories those
who loved him will forever
share.
Interment was held
at Clover Hill Park
Cemetery in Birmingham.
Contributions may
be made to American
Friends of Magen David
Adom, Yad Ezra, or to
the Shabbat Lunch Fund
at Congregation Shaarey
Zedek. Arrangements by
Dorfman Chapel.
