AUGUST 8 • 2024 | 33 J N Wegenke also was a basketball official who worked Division I college games. Having his father get his first-in-one in more than six decades of playing golf made it an emotional day for B.J. B.J. didn’t play in the outing, but he stopped by the outing hospitality tent afterwards to congratulate his father, who had called him to give him the good news about the hole-in-one. “I think B.J. was more excited than anyone about my hole-in-one,” Rycus said. “B.J. would tell me good luck on getting my first hole-in-one every time he learned that I was going to play golf.” Ron Rycus is a 10 handicap golfer. He’s also a good bowler. He also started bowling around the time of his bar mitzvah. “I’d say bowling is my No. 1 sport because you can bowl year-round,” he said. “You can play golf in Michigan for what, six months a year?” Rycus has three perfect 300 games on the lanes. They came in 2010 and 2017 at City Limits East Lansing Sports Grill & Bowling Center in a now-defunct B’nai B’rith league and 2023 in a UAW league at Spare Time Entertainment Center in Lansing. Asked the age-old question of what’s tougher to do, bowl a 300 game or shoot a hole-in-one, Rycus had an answer. “I’d say a 300 game,” he said. “You have to have 12 straight good shots. You have to be consistent the entire game. You need to have one good shot and perhaps some mazel (luck) for a hole-in-one.” Send sports news to stevestein502004@yahoo.com.
