‘SHOESHINE’
AUG. 10, 7 PM

Shoeshine

Portraits of two beloved icons
— Sholom Aleichem and
Theodore Bikel — are woven
together in the documentary,
Theodore Bikel: In the Shoes
of Sholom Aleichem, which
combines Bikel’s charismatic
storytelling and masterful
performances with a broader
exploration of Aleichem’s
remarkable life and work.
Join The J on Sunday,
Aug. 18, at 3 p.m. for a cele-
bration of Theodore Bikel’s
Centennial year. Although he
has been gone for eight years,
his remarkable life and legacy,
his contributions in the fields
of music, drama, Yiddishkeit
and tikkun olam continue to
influence.
Theodore Bikel, the unstop-
pable performer whose career
spanned more than 150
screen roles (including an
Oscar-nominated turn in The
Defiant Ones) and countless
stage and musical produc-
tions, was also the fore-
most interpreter of Sholom
Aleichem’s work. Bikel played
Tevye the Milkman on stage
more than 2,000 times.
Following the film, Aimee
Ginsburg Bikel will share
stories of her late husband’s
career and legacy. She will be
joined onstage for a concert of
Bikel’s greatest hits performed
by acclaimed Yiddish musical
artist (Detroit favorite) Mikhl
Yashinsky and musical direc-
tor Dr. Lorry A. Black, former
associate director, Lowell
Milken Center for Music of
American Jewish Experience
UCLA, and new director
of lifelong learning at Shir
Tikvah in Troy
Tickets are $18 and avail-
able at TheBerman.org.
