2023 following the Hamas
invasion. France has a
large Muslim population
and, in May, an Algerian
immigrant tossed a grenade
into a synagogue in Rouen,
which is located about two
hours northwest of Paris.
The building was empty so
there were no injuries, and
the perpetrator was killed
by police after brandishing
a knife.
Israeli athletes understand
that they may face animosity
from some competitors at the
Olympics but are steadfast
in their determination to
remain strong and focus on
their sports. Thomas Bach,
president of the International
Olympic Committee (IOC),
has cautioned participants
against boycotts and discrim-
ination. Security for Israeli
athletes will be tight, as it has
been since 11 Israeli athletes
were killed at the Munich
Olympics in 1972.
According to the presi-
dent of the Israeli Olympic
Committee, Yael Arad, its
athletes represent Israel’s
diverse population —
including Jews, Muslims and
Druze. Israel’s two flag bear-
ers are immigrants. Peter
Paltchik, who was born
in Ukraine, won a bronze
medal in the Tokyo 2020
Olympics. Andrea Murez, a
swimmer, was born in the
U.S.; she participated in the
Rio Olympics in 2016 and
the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.
Israel’s soccer team will
participate for the first time
since 1976 after qualifying
in the 2023 semi-finals.
The Paris 2024 Olympics
— July 26 through Aug.
11 — will be broadcast
on NBC and Paramount.
Preliminary events for foot-
ball and rugby were held
on July 24, and the opening
ceremony will be held on
Friday, July 26.
