“We have a long history
of people threatening us.
And we see that hiding who
we are has never worked …
If anything, at this point,
[the threats] motivate me to
keep going because it just
proves how necessary it is
that I continue to stand up
and do everything that I can
to fight for my people. My
weapon is my megaphone
and my microphone and my
Instagram platform. That’s
what I have.”
Just days before the Hillel
event, Lizzy’s Aunt Linda
passed away suddenly. The
funeral was held the day of
the event, but Savetsky kept
her plans to come to Detroit
and speak, dedicating the
evening to her beloved aunt.
“It is such a gift for me
to get to be surrounded by
amazing Jewish women and
such a beautiful community
tonight. It’s been a hard few
days for me,” she said. “I
missed my aunt’s funeral
today to be here. But there’s
no place that I’d rather be
than getting to share in
spirituality and inspiration
with my fellow Jewish

women. I really believe that
we are the ones that change
the world. There is nothing
like a Jewish woman.”
Savetsky led the group
in a moving prayer and
encouraged the women in
attendance to light Shabbat
candles. There were candles
on each seat for participants
to take home. She also urged
those in the audience to find
their own way to make an
impact on behalf of Israel and
the Jewish people and not to
be afraid to discuss difficult
topics from a firsthand
perspective.
“What stood out the most
was the way Lizzy was able to
share her Jewish connection
and connection to Israel in
both an inspiring and practical
manner,” said Estie Tolwin,
managing director of Aish
Detroit, who helped organize
the event. “We prayed together
and were encouraged to do
more mitzvot and, at the same
time, she gave us real tools to
advocate for Israel.”

The women in attendance
mingled and enjoyed a dessert
reception following the event.
