workers. His first major Ford 
project was the company’s 
Highland Park Plant, which 
opened in January 1910. 
He later designed the Ford 
Rouge Complex and many 
other Ford facilities.
In 2020, the Albert Kahn 
Legacy Foundation, a non-
profit organization, was 
established in Detroit to rec-
ognize and expand knowl-
edge of Kahn’s achievements. 
In 2021, foundation board 
members met with top exec-
utives of The Henry Ford. 
According to Levi Smith, 
vice president of the founda-
tion, they proposed to The 
Henry Ford’s top executives 
that a building be created in 
Greenfield Village to show-
case Kahn’s contribution to 
innovative industrial design. 
The Albert Kahn Foundation 
was willing to underwrite it. 
The Foundation Museum 
officials responded that they 

would consider it, but later 
said there wasn’t space for 
such a structure.
However, when the Albert 
Legacy Foundation creat-
ed an exhibit about Kahn’s 
life and work at the Detroit 
Historical Museum two years 
ago, Henry Ford Museum 
officials came to see it. 
A few months ago, The 
Henry Ford opened a new 
building near the Greenfield 
Village entrance — a 
restaurant named Stand 44, 
designed to resemble Ford’s 
Highland Park Plant, which 
was designed by Albert Kahn 
and Associates. Built in 1908, 
the building was dubbed the 
“Crystal Palace,” according 
to Smith, because of its large 
windows and roof panels 
that could be opened from 
inside. The building’s natural 
light was a big improvement 
over the illumination pro-
vided by early 20th-century 
light bulbs.

Stand 44 has high ceilings 
and roof panels similar to 
the Highland Park Plant. In 
the Stand 44’s entrance, a 
large panel with photographs 
describes Kahn’s contribution 

to American architecture and 
the Ford Motor Company. 
As Smith explains, “It took 
95 years (since the museum 
opened), but Kahn got recogni-
tion as a Jewish innovator.”
