“Doing artwork and going
to the fairs have taught me a
lot about people and patience,”
the woodworker said. “
Artists
can be our worst critics, and
we have to learn that.
“If we don’t like a piece,
somebody else might think
it’s the most beautiful piece
ever seen. I’ve learned that
and not to be hard on myself.
Creativity is in the eye.”
Although Hetherington
used to keep a lot of her pieces
in her own home, she has bro-
ken away from doing that. She
explained she was beginning
to feel like a hoarder and has
since concentrated on selling.
“I like going to the fairs and
interacting with people,” the
artist said. “Normally, during
my everyday work, I don’t
socialize with people because
I’m like a hermit in my studio.
Going to the fairs helps me
interact with people, and I like
being around people.
“I’ve done performing arts
as well as visual arts, and I
want to start making wall
mounts with instruments and
materials.”
In her fourth year at the
Orchard Lake Fine Arts Show,
Hetherington will be among
125 juried artists in various
fields. There also will be live
entertainment from the One
Love Reggae Band, Sheila
Landis and Rick Matle Jazz
Trio, D-Tour Band and Denise
Davis and the Motor City
Sensations.
Food vendors include Buoy’s
Coffee, Chimney Cakes, Great
Lakes Eatz and Treatz, Greek
Tavern, It’s Freeze-Dried
Candies and Treats, Kona Ice,
Lekker’s Choco Treats and
That’s Dat Food Truck.
In addition to the profes-
sional aspects of the show,
there will be a Youth Art
Competition with money to be
awarded to winning entrants
in grades up to eighth.
