years and decided I wanted to 
try something different, and I 
started painting.
”
In moving on to a new 
approach to art, Abrahamson 
had to learn how to use some 
different tools and materials so 
he could represent his take on 
various environmental aspects 
that surrounded him.
Abrahamson, 64, recalls 
how he enjoyed watching his 
father at work and then help-
ing him at the fairs. 
“Back in the 1970s, I used to 
help my dad carry big wooden 
statues,
” said Abrahamson, an 
all-American gymnast in col-
lege. “
As he was selling them, 
he was reviewed by an art crit-
ic for the Sun-Times.
”
The current multimedia 
artist, who also sells work 
through online galleries and 
his website (davidafineart.
com), enjoys taking his own 
pieces to the fairs and spends 
freed-up time reading all kinds 
of books with diverse subjects 
that have caught his attention. 
“I like meeting all the people 

at the fairs and getting their 
reactions to my art,
” he said. 
“Some of the reactions I get 
are really amazing. Some of 
the people compare me to 
world-famous artists. Some 
are really struck by the feelings 
they get by looking at my art. 
“Sometimes they don’t like 
abstract art generally, but they 
tell me they like what I do. 
This season and last, I’ve been 
leaning more toward neutral 
colors. Sometimes people like 
to have things that go with 
furniture so I can still create 
what I want to create and give 
them what they want, too.
”
Among the many extra pro-
grams in this year’s fair sched-
ule will be presentations by 
the Youth Art Fair, Michigan 
Silversmith’s Guild and the 
Ann Arbor Potters Guild. 
Three stages of live entertain-
ment include the Stage on 
Main presented by WEMU 
89.1, the Fountain Stage pre-
sented by 107.1 and the Street 
Stage on William presented by 
Michigan Public.
