Another effort Gottlieb is

proud of happened recently —
the second annual JARC Ellen
Labes Festival Series Carnival.
The carnival, which takes place
at Adat Shalom Synagogue,
is specifically catered for
individuals with developmental
disabilities and sensory
sensitivities.
There were more than 700
people in attendance, Gottlieb
says, more than half being
adults with disabilities from
the Jewish community and
disability community at large.
“Being there and seeing
their faces is just so satis-
fying,” Gottlieb said. “And
again, that’s all because of
those philanthropy dollars.”
Gottlieb is a member of
the Oakland County Health
Department’s Community
Health Assessment Team,
ensuring the needs of people
with disabilities are a priori-
ty for the county.
“Working with this pop-
ulation, I’m really sort of
plugged in and can help
identify what they need,”
Gottlieb said. “It’s been
rewarding to be a voice for
them from this institutional
perspective and to better
serve Oakland County.”
Gottlieb also serves as
the chair for the Residential
Provider Group for the
Network of Jewish Human
Service Agencies. The group
brings together like-minded
Jewish agencies with resi-
dential programs for adults
with disabilities — from
across state lines and inter-
national borders — to serve
as a resource for each other,
discuss best practices and
share challenges and tri-
umphs in the field.
Gottlieb has dedicated
his time and passion
to numerous other
organizations in the Detroit
Jewish community. He was
a community representative

for JDC, helping Detroiters
get a better understanding
of Jewish communities
around the world. He was a
fellow at OneTable, bringing
intention to Shabbat dinners
to Detroiters during the
pandemic.
Gottlieb lives in Southfield
with his wife, Laura, and
their 12-week-old baby, Betty
Rose Gottlieb. He is cur-
rently pursuing his MBA at
Walsh College.
Gottlieb has all of that on
his plate and still has time to
tutor b’nai mitzvah students
through Temple Beth El.
“I love tutoring. The
beginning is like pulling
teeth, but then they’re like,
‘Look how much progress
I made; I really figured out
this one line!’ I love seeing
them learn and come to
enjoy it,” Gottlieb said.
From working with adults
with developmental disabili-
ties to helping b’nai mitzvah
students, Gottlieb has a deep
passion for helping people.
Gottlieb attributes that pas-
sion to being exposed to all
the Jewish community has
to offer from an early age.
“I’ve put all of my life into
making sure the communi-
ty I’m a part of is vibrant,
diverse, robust and has all
the trappings of any other
Jewish community that
is considered successful,”
Gottlieb said. “And when I
feel this community is miss-
ing something, I try to go
out there and bring it in.”
Gottlieb becomes more
and more entrenched in the
community every single day.
“Part of it is wanting to
give back, but also wanting
to live in a place I want to
be a part of,” Gottlieb said.
“If you don’t put energy into
making the community you
want, it’s not going to be
there. That’s where my drive
comes from.”
