program, including the last
four as coach.
Bernstein’s teams won the
Intersectional 2 title in his
final two years as coach,
ending a 16-year drought.
At age 21, Swanson
was undoubtedly one of
the youngest high school
coaches in any sport in the
state.
He played baseball
and soccer and bowled
for Bloomfield Hills
High School before he
graduated in 2021. Then
he played soccer for a year
at Concordia University in
Ann Arbor.
“I wanted to get into
coaching high school
baseball, so I was happy to
get the Frankel job,” he said.
“But I didn’t know what I
was walking into before my
interview and the first day
of practice.
“As it turned out, I loved
coaching the team. There
were just 143 students and
67 boys at Frankel this past
school year, but there was
so much talent on the team.
That was cool to see.”
Swanson has a familial
connection to Frankel.

Duane Swanson, his
father, has been the
director of operations
at Somerset Inn in Troy
since 1987. Somerset
Inn was owned for
many years by Frankel
Associates, headed
by President Stanley
Frankel.
Frankel Jewish
Academy was named
for Samuel and Jean
Frankel, Stanley
Frankel’s parents, in
2006, after they made
a generous donation
to the school, which
opened in 2000.
Besides coaching the
Frankel baseball team,
James Swanson is working
in sales at Somerset Inn.
Shaevsky was one of the
Frankel baseball team’s six
seniors this season.
He said despite losing the
district game to Whitmore
Lake, the Jaguars played
their best game of the year.
“We had so much energy.
More than in any game I’ve
ever played at any level,” he
said. “I had a good game. I
got two hits (including an
RBI single) and I played
well defensively. I wish
we would have won, but
I’m glad I ended my high
school career with a game
like that.”
The other seniors on the
Frankel baseball roster were
Ali Michaels, Elliot Salama,
Noah Hack, Ryan Rubin
and Ryan Schmeltz.
Also on the team were
Aidan and Austin Squarcia,
Ari Gottlieb, Drew
Edelstein, Louie Kowalsky,
Max Upfall, Noah Kantor
and Noah Tepper.
