program, including the last 
four as coach. 
Bernstein’s teams won the 
Intersectional 2 title in his 
final two years as coach, 
ending a 16-year drought.
At age 21, Swanson 
was undoubtedly one of 
the youngest high school 
coaches in any sport in the 
state. 
He played baseball 
and soccer and bowled 
for Bloomfield Hills 
High School before he 
graduated in 2021. Then 
he played soccer for a year 
at Concordia University in 
Ann Arbor.
“I wanted to get into 
coaching high school 
baseball, so I was happy to 
get the Frankel job,” he said. 
“But I didn’t know what I 
was walking into before my 
interview and the first day 
of practice.
“As it turned out, I loved 
coaching the team. There 
were just 143 students and 
67 boys at Frankel this past 
school year, but there was 
so much talent on the team. 
That was cool to see.”
Swanson has a familial 
connection to Frankel.

Duane Swanson, his 
father, has been the 
director of operations 
at Somerset Inn in Troy 
since 1987. Somerset 
Inn was owned for 
many years by Frankel 
Associates, headed 
by President Stanley 
Frankel.
Frankel Jewish 
Academy was named 
for Samuel and Jean 
Frankel, Stanley 
Frankel’s parents, in 
2006, after they made 
a generous donation 
to the school, which 
opened in 2000.
Besides coaching the 
Frankel baseball team, 
James Swanson is working 
in sales at Somerset Inn. 
Shaevsky was one of the 
Frankel baseball team’s six 
seniors this season.
He said despite losing the 
district game to Whitmore 
Lake, the Jaguars played 
their best game of the year.
“We had so much energy. 
More than in any game I’ve 
ever played at any level,” he 
said. “I had a good game. I 
got two hits (including an 
RBI single) and I played 
well defensively. I wish 
we would have won, but 
I’m glad I ended my high 
school career with a game 
like that.”
The other seniors on the 
Frankel baseball roster were 
Ali Michaels, Elliot Salama, 
Noah Hack, Ryan Rubin 
and Ryan Schmeltz. 
Also on the team were 
Aidan and Austin Squarcia, 
Ari Gottlieb, Drew 
Edelstein, Louie Kowalsky, 
Max Upfall, Noah Kantor 
and Noah Tepper.
