oin the JCC of Greater
Ann Arbor for its
ninth Annual Golf
Outing “Fore the Kids” on
Monday, Aug. 12, at Polo
Fields Ann Arbor, honoring
Sharon and Chuck Newman,
and help raise scholarship
funds for the JCC of Greater
Ann Arbor’s camp, youth,
early childhood and JCC
Maccabi programs.

Sharon and Chuck
Newman have been active
participants in Jewish and
community life for most
of their adult lives. Sharon
grew up in Detroit and
Chuck in Wayne, Michigan.
They have resided in Ann
Arbor since 1960 and 1958
respectively, where they
raised their children, Steve,
Rachel, Mike and Shaina,
and are the proud grandparents of nine.
Two years after they married in
1965 (having met in Ann Arbor),
they became founding members of
Temple Beth Emeth. While still in
their 20s, Sharon was the president
of the Temple Sisterhood and Chuck
was the treasurer. One of their most
rewarding accomplishments has been
their founding of the Jewish Community
Center of Ann Arbor. They also founded
Celebration of Jewish Arts in 1981,
which presented Jewish artists such as
Theodore Bikel and Geula Gill.
Chuck’s involvement in the JCC
included roles as its second president

and twice serving as chair of the
Opening Ceremonies of the JCC
Maccabi Games when they were held
at the Palace of Auburn Hills. He went
on to co-found the Michigan Israel
Business Bridge, where he served as
president and was also president of
the Michigan Jewish Conference. He
served on the boards of the University
of Michigan Hillel, Eastern Michigan
University Hillel and eventually held
multiple offices on the Board of
Directors of National Hillel, including
its chairmanship.
During COVID, Chuck wanted
programming to continue for the JCC,

and he started an ongoing
program, Conversations
with Chuck, where he would
interview guests biweekly
over Zoom, with audiences
reaching 100 screens.
Sharon has also been an
active participant in Jewish
communal life since high
school, where she was
involved with the JCC and
the B’nai B’rith Girls in
Detroit. She served on the
first Board of Directors of
the JCC in Ann Arbor and
as its first treasurer and
secretary. Sharon served as
the delegation head of the
local JCC Maccabi team for
12 years, traveling with the
team to locations all over the
country.
