back by helping the Metro
Detroit community navigate
and understand what was
happening overseas.
“Even though it was
really difficult for us, we felt
we were doing something
important,” Rachel
Schreiber adds.
The Schreibers were often
asked tough questions by
students, such as whether
it’s safe to live in Israel or if
life in Israel is scary.
“We told them it’s not
hard,” she continues. “It’s
home.”
A WARM WELCOME
As Rachel and Yael
Schreiber plan to return
to Israel at the beginning
of August following the
completion of their second
year of Bnot Sherut service,
they’ll take with them
countless memories and an
experience they say they’d
never trade for another.
“The biggest thing that
surprised us here is there
is so much support from
Jews around the world for
Israel,” Yael Schreiber says.
“We didn’t know there are
so many Jews in Metro
Detroit and that it’s such a
big community.”
She calls the experience
“amazing,” especially at
the initial outbreak of the
Israel-Hamas war when the
local Jewish community
rallied to provide the
Schreibers with home-
cooked meals, support, and
to help them feel loved and
welcomed.
“They kept asking
about our family and
about how everyone is
doing,” Schreiber says.
“Everyone took part in the
programs that we did for
the community. Everybody
tried to help by donating
something.”
Dr. Joshua Levisohn,
head of school at Farber
Hebrew Day School, says it
was an “incredibly difficult
year” for their Israeli
Shlichim, particularly their
19-year-old Bnot Sherut,
but it was perhaps the most
important year of service
the school experienced thus
far.
“Bringing the reality
of Israel to our students
was so critical,” he says.
“Awareness about the
soldiers, about the hostages,
about the complexities of
Yom HaZikaron and Yom
HaAtzmaut.”
“Because of their
proximity in age to the
students,” Levisohn adds,
“Rachel and Yael have a
very close relationship with
our children and have the
greatest impact on their
thinking and attachment to
Israel.”
The twins’ year in
Metro Detroit also opened
their eyes to the breadth
and warmth of the local
Jewish community, Rachel
Schreiber explains, a very
“special” experience.
Upon their return to
Israel, both twins plan to
attend university. Yet for
now, they continue to enjoy
their remaining months in
Metro Detroit.
“This year was the most
humbling and meaningful
year of my life,” Rachel
Schreiber says. “Everyone
here is trying to be Jewish
in good ways. They’re doing
their best.”
