T

his Father’s Day, two
days after Flag Day, think
about doing something
patriotic.
Hebrew Memorial Chapel,
Hebrew Memorial Park
Cemetery and Superior Casket
Co. are providing that oppor-

tunity — sponsoring a flag
retirement ceremony on Sunday,
June 16, at 2 p.m. at the Veterans
Section of Hebrew Memorial
Park Cemetery in Roseville.
Retired funeral director Otto
Dube says all are welcome as
they retire, pay tribute and tra-

ditionally bury over 100 of our
country’s older flags.
The event will have full mil-
itary honors, including a bugle
salute and gun salute as the
flags are being lowered into the
ground in the casket. Superior
Casket Co. is donating the
casket and wrapping it in red,
white and blue colors. Hebrew
Memorial Chapel and Hebrew
Memorial Park are donating
their services and all interment
expenses. The event will have
opening prayers and include
speeches by local politicians and
other speakers. The service will
last 45 minutes to an hour.
A “retired” flag means it’s not
fit to be flown anymore, often
due to it being damaged in
some way. Whether it’s faded or
tattered, those flags aren’t just
disposed of, they’re taken down
out of respect and properly
retired.
The Jewish War Veterans have
collected the 100+ American

flags that will be traditionally
buried.
Dube says there are two ways
to honorably retire a flag. The
most common way is actually
by fire.
“
And it’s a special burning. It’s
not like they just throw it into a
fire,
” Dube explains.
Considering the times we live
in, Dube says they’re going with
the second option of burying it
below the frost line.
“I don’t want any vision of
American Jews burning flags
right now, with antisemitism on
the rise,
” he says.
If people have a flag that
should be retired, Hebrew
Memorial Chapel now has a
box in its lobby where people
can bring the flags to be taken
care of.
“It’s a free, open event, and
the idea is on Father’s Day,
before you go to your barbecue,
you can show a little patriotism
for our country,
” Dube says.
