boycott exposed some
issues within Detroit’s
Jewish community. Some
of Detroit’s German Jews
viewed themselves as more
assimilated and modern than
the recent Eastern European
Jewish immigrants, and
some were concerned about
socialist influences within
the community.
Cangany said that the
Jewish Agitation Bureau,
a national socialist
organization, brought a
speaker — Baruch Charney
Vladeck — to Detroit during
this time. He was manager of The Jewish Forward (a socialist newspaper), a labor leader
and a New York City councilman. This outreach to Jewish communities in multiple
states was part of a national socialist movement to empower workers seeking better
working conditions and economic change.
Cangany said that President Teddy Roosevelt fought the Beef Trust but that its
“demise” took a decade — from 1912 to 1922. In the meanwhile, some slaughtering
of animals took place in Detroit and, in 1914, a kosher meat inspector described the
conditions there as “appalling.”

Jeannie Weiner, president, Jewish Historical Society of
Michigan (JHSM), and speaker Catherine Cangany, Ph.D,
JHSM’s executive director
