n May 4, famously
known as Star Wars
Day, Moishe House
Royal Oak hosted a gathering
and watch party to celebrate
the day and month. The origi-
nal six Star Wars films were all
released in the month of May.
Moishe House is an interna-
tional organization that aims
to bring together and actively
engage the young Jewish gen-
eration. Moishe House spans
more than 27 countries and
reaches more than 70,000
young adults around the world
every year.
Moishe House Royal Oak
(MoHoRo) is one of the homes
in Michigan, where a group
of young Jewish adults live
together and host Jewish pro-
gramming for their friends and
the community.
Sophie Dwoskin is one of the
current residents of MoHoRo
and has been living there for
almost three years. With the
opportunity of May 4 falling on
a weekend this year, Dwoskin
says they simply had to take
advantage of it.
“It was Star Wars Day, so
we had to do something. And
we just like to do chill social
events. I think that’s what gets
people to come,” Dwoskin said.
Those in attendance went
on a journey back to a galaxy
far, far away, as they watched a
special screening of the classic
that started it all: Star Wars
Episode IV – A New Hope,
released in May 1977.
“We had people there who
have watched the film multiple
times, and then people who
had never seen it,” Dwoskin
said. “It was a great way to get
people together.”
Many in attendance wore
their Star Wars gear, and
snacks included little pretzel
lightsabers.
About 15 people were in
attendance, ranging from 21
to 31 years old, around the
Moishe House age range.
“With the social events that
come out of Moishe House, I
just want people to have fun
and get to meet other people in
the young Jewish professional
Metro Detroit community.
That’s pretty much the goal,”
Dwoskin said.
Whether this becomes a
yearly event with a new Star
Wars movie each year will
not be up to Dwoskin and the
other three current MoHoRo
residents, as they’ll all be mov-
ing out of the house at the end
of July.
MoHoRo is currently seek-
ing new residents aged 22-32
who are excited about living
together and building dynamic
Jewish community in Detroit.
Residents stay in the house for
a minimum of one year.
