mitzvah at a 
private service, 
led by Rabbi 
Jason Miller, on Friday, May 
24, 2024. She will be 
joined in celebration by her 
proud parents, Hope and 
Jason Brown, and her older 
sister, Eliza. Libby is the 
beloved granddaughter of 
Haven and Dennis King, 
Barbie and Mark Edwards, 
and Allen Brown. 
Libby is a student at 
Berkshire Middle School 
in Beverly Hills. For her 
mitzvah project, Libby has 
volunteered weekend 
hours over the past 
months, assisting clients 
at Yad Ezra in Berkley, 
distributing kosher food to 
vulnerable members of the 
local Jewish community, 
including those who did 
not have the necessary 
resources this Passover.

Eve Lewis, 
daughter of Erin 
and Aaron Lewis 
and big sister to 
Roen, will be 
called to the 
Torah as a bat mitzvah at 
Temple Beth El in 
Bloomfield Township on 
Saturday, May 25, 2024. 
She attends Derby Middle 
School in Birmingham. 
Eve’s mitzvah project 
will support the Dignity 
Grows Organization, which 
provides essential supplies 
for women in need. 

Trevor Shapiro, 
son of Brenda 
and Adam 
Shapiro, will lead 
the congregation 
in prayer as a 
bar mitzvah at Temple 
Israel in West Bloomfield 
on Friday, May 24, 2024. 
He will be joined in 
celebration by his sister 
Riley and brother Reed. 
Trevor is the loving 
grandchild of Evelyn and 
James Miller, and Paula and 
Michael Shapiro. 
He is a student at South 
Hills Middle School in 
Bloomfield Hills. Trevor’s 
most meaningful mitzvah 
project was creating a 
hat company, “themhats,” 
and donating a portion of 
the proceeds to support 
those affected by Crohn’s 
disease.

Emeri Sherman 
Charlip (Miriam 
Simcha) of West 
Bloomfield will 
become a bat 
mitzvah at 
Temple Kol Ami in West 
Bloomfield on Saturday, 
May 24, 2024. Her parents 
are Jill Sherman Marx and 
Joshua Charlip. Emeri is the 
sister of Chase and Abigail, 
Jade, Landon and Emily, 
and Isaac. Emeri is the 
granddaughter of Barbara 
Sherman and the late 
Sheldon Sherman, the late 
Eliot and Sheila Charlip.
Emeri is a student at Hillel 
Day School of Metropolitan 
Detroit in Farmington 
Hills. Her mitzvah project 
involved donating 100 
insulated water bottles to 
homeless shelters.

Savannah 
Somers (Adina 
Gavriela) of 
Farmington Hills 
will become a 
bat mitzvah on 
May 25, 2024, at Adat 
Shalom Synagogue in 
Farmington Hills. She is the 
daughter of Sherri Gerber-
Somers and David Somers. 
Her proud grandparents 
are Joyce and Steve 
Gerber, Sandy Somers and 
Ron Somers.
Savannah is a student at 
Warner Middle School in 
Farmington Hills. Among 
her various mitzvah 
volunteer activities, 
she thought her most 
meaningful one was 
helping human trafficking 
survivors at Sanctum 
House.

Samuel Elliot 
Weiss, son of 
Amy and Kevin 
Weiss, will be 
called to the 
Torah as a bar 
mitzvah at Temple Israel in 
West Bloomfield on 
Saturday, May 25, 2024. He 
will be joined in celebration 
by his sisters, Eliana and 
Gwendolyn. Samuel is the 
loving grandchild of Andria 
and Mark Weiss, and Janice 
and Barry Kelman. He is the 

adoring great-grandchild of 
Mark Hechler, the late Rose 
Hechler and the late Betty 
Weiss. 
He is a student at Norup 
International School in 
Oak Park. Samuel’s most 
meaningful mitzvah project 
was organizing a lemonade 
stand and collecting 
donations and needed 
items for the Detroit Dog 
Rescue. 

Asher Isaac 
Zekman of 
Bloomfield Hills 
will become a 
bar mitzvah at 
Congregation 
Shaarey Zedek on 
Saturday, May 25, 2024. 
Proud are parents, Drs. 
Esther and Richard 
Zekman, and brothers, 
Aaron and Jonah. Proud 
grandparents include Irma 
and Mel Weiss of Afula, 
Israel, Steven Polevoy of 
Santa Fe, N.M., and Scotti 
McCarthy of Arvada, Colo. 
He is also the grandson of 
the late Robert Zekman. 
Asher attends Hillel Day

Detroit in Farmington Hills. 
His mitzvah project was 
delivering food through Yad 
Ezra in Berkley.

Jewish community. Anniversaries, engagements and weddings 
with a photo (preferably color) can appear at a cost of $18 each. 
Births are $10. There is no charge for bar/bat mitzvahs or for 
special birthdays starting at the 90th.
