aving fun with lan-
guage can be more
than just something to
do for entertainment. As wit-
nessed by the following exam-
ples (thanks to a faithful reader’s
submission), clever wording
can be good for
business.
A sign in a
shoe repair store
in Vancouver
reads: “We will
heel you …We
will save your
sole …We will
even dye for you.
”
A sign on a Denver blinds
and curtain truck states “Blind
man driving.
”
In a podiatrist’s office we

are advised “Time wounds all
heels.
” A pun AND a twist on
an adage; (good on you!)
On a septic tank truck, we
are reminded “Yesterday’s Meals
on Wheels. (Who says there is
no truth in advertising?)” On
another was this honest truth:

“Caution — This Truck is full of
Political Promises.
”
At an optometrist’s office, we
are encouraged to learn “If you
don’t see what you’re looking
for, you’ve come to the right
place.
”

On a plumber’s truck there is
truth in “We repair what your
husband fixed.
” And on another
“Don’t sleep with a drip. Call
your plumber.
”
At a tire shop in Milwaukee:
“Invite us to your next blowout.
”
At a car dealership we find

this warning: “The best way to
get back on your feet — miss a
car payment.
”
Still with a mind to cars, we
find, outside a muffler shop
“No appointment necessary. We
hear you coming.
”

In a veterinarian’s waiting
room, we are advised “Be back
in 5 minutes. Sit! Stay!”
An electric company cau-
tioned “We would be delighted
if you send in your payment
on time. However, if you don’t,
YOU will be de-lighted.
”
While looking for a place
to eat, we see in a restaurant
window: “Don’t stand there and
be hungry; come on in and get
fed up.
”
In the front yard of a funeral
home is this friendly reminder:
“Drive carefully. We’ll wait.
”
Keep an eye open for this
type of word humor; it can
brighten your day and maybe
help you find a service you
seek.
