body’s families got together all the time,
” she
says. “With three little kids, my husband and
I talk about principles and values we want to
instill, and being Jewish and carrying on Jewish
traditions is a big part of that, so us being com-
mitted to that every week is a big part of show-
ing them that it is important.
”
The kids, now Hillel Day School students
themselves, bring home challahs every week
from school. They love being Jewish and cel-
ebrating Shabbat, she says. On Fridays after
school, the kids help set the table, and their
grandparents come and play with them after
work, she says. When it’s time to start, they pick
out a family value and talk about what it means
— from “be a proud Jew and support Israel” to
“love your friends and family” and “treat people
with respect” — then discuss how to take action
on it.
“We really want our kids to know how much
we care about who they become as people, and
who they are as people,
” she says. The kids put
money in tzedakah boxes, and they say bless-
ings, with the kids each taking a turn saying
hamotzi, the blessing over the bread.

They’re building memories as a
family, with multiple generations
stepping out of their otherwise busy
routines of work and scheduled activ-
ities to take part in the meal. Each
kid has their own special kiddush
cup. For challah covers, they rotate
ones the children made at school as
they share this special weekly expe-
rience.
“I think it’s really cool that my
kids will also grow up only knowing
lots of love and being together for
Shabbat.
