subject of a book she wrote.
Macadam wants to point
out reasons for differences
between the book and movie.
Macadam, who was born
and grew up in Michigan,
took dance lessons in
Royal Oak and became a
professional dancer in New
York before an accident
prevented her from returning
to the stage. She went on
to get a master’s degree in
creative writing and then was
teaching writing in college
as she approached writing in
her independent sphere.
“It blows me away how, in
these horrible circumstances
in 999, young women
help each other in such
extraordinary ways in acts
of survival,” Macadam said,
explaining that the young
women did not know where
they were going when they
were taken on a bus to
Auschwitz.
“Annette Zelman, in my
book and another film titled
The Story of Annette Zelman,
is in two prisons before she
goes to Auschwitz. I’m not
trying to tell the horror in
both stories I covered. It’s
about how women come
together and help each other.”
Macadam, who grew up in
a Quaker household, said she
has a deep interest in rituals
of various religions and has
participated in Jewish events.
“I will talk a little about the

work I’ve done and open the
discussion to the audience,”
Macadam said about her
Michigan appearance. “I like
to answer questions about
the women in the films. I’ve
interviewed eight women
from the first transport, and
there are only three left.”

A MUSICAL COMPONENT
Other films being shown in
the festival are How to Dance
in Ohio (May 5), Running on
Sand (May 5), Home (May 8),
The Catskills (May 12) and
Exodus 91 (May 14).
Eric Gutman, a Michigan-
based stage entertainer
who has toured with Jersey
Boys, will provide a musical
program on opening night,
and Oshi (Oshrat Masala),
an Israeli-Ethiopian singer-
songwriter, will take the stage
after the films Our Story and
Exodus 91.
“I try to give hope in my
songs and in the hearts of
the audience,” said Oshi, who
lives in Tel Aviv. “‘Search
Within You,’ for example,
is an original song written
in Hebrew and Amharic
(Ethiopian language) that
seeks to search for the right
words that will arrive at the
right time.
“I sing Leonard Cohen’s
‘Hallelujah’ because I love
singing songs that excite me.
It can be in any language,
and I just learn how to sing
them.”
Although Oshi has worked
different engagements in the
United States, this will be
her first trip to Michigan.
Her music can be heard on
Spotify and YouTube. She
plays electric guitar, double
bass and piano and started
studying music when she was
16.
“I usually sing what I want
to say,” Oshi said.
