PURELY COMMENTARY

essay
Israel’s Midwest Consul General
Meets Detroit’s Young Leadership
T

he Consul General
of Israel to the
Midwest, Yinam
Cohen, recently completed
a two-day trip to Michigan.
During his trip, JCRC/
AJC had the
pleasure of
hosting the
Consul General
and his team
for a thought-
provoking
evening and
discussion with
some of Metro Detroit’s
young Jewish professionals
and leaders. Eager to show
their support for Israel,
more than 50 of Metro
Detroit’s prominent young
leaders attended the dinner.
Speaking to the next
generation of leadership

in the Detroit Jewish
community, Consul General
Cohen spoke about the
rise in antisemitism and
anti-Israel hate online, and
the role and responsibility
that young people have in
countering it. He outlined
the unprecedented strategic
challenges faced by Israel
at this time, including the
weaponization of social
media apps like TikTok
and Instagram, which
are being used by Israel’s
enemies to flood the
younger generation with
misinformation about Israel.
Those in attendance
were a microcosm of the
Jewish community itself.
Guests from all backgrounds
represented over a dozen
Jewish organizations,

nonprofits, schools and
synagogues, in addition to
business owners and leaders
of industry. In a show of
solidarity, JCRC/AJC was
also joined by some of our
closest partners and allies
from the Hindu community
and the Hispanic
community.
At this time of such
grave importance, when
notified that Consul General
Cohen was to make an
appearance in Detroit, the
next generation of Jewish
leadership in Metro Detroit
rose to the occasion and
clearly demonstrated our
community’s commitment
to Israel.

Daniel Bucksbaum is the Israel and

Interfaith Associate for the JCRC/AJC.
