n March 25, the Joan
Meyers Jampel Center
for Michigan Jewish
Heritage welcomed the Jewish
War Veterans Department of
Michigan (JWV)
for the opening of
its newest exhibit:
The People Behind
the Posts.
Since 1896, the
JWV has been an
advocate for the
care and rights
of veterans. It supports local
programs and educates the
public about the contributions
of Jews to the U.S. military. It
also serves to remind the public
about those who gave their lives
in service to this country. The
Jampel Center holds the JWV
Archive.
JWV Posts are commonly
named in honor of servicemen.
The Center’s exhibit seeks to
recognize these individuals and

tell their story. The Charles
and Aaron Kogan Post 510, for
example, was the first post in
Detroit to be named for two
individuals, in this case, broth-
ers. Joseph L. Bale, whose brave
acts earned him a Distinguished
Service Cross, is the namesake
of Post 474, and JWV Post 729
is named for Dennis Greenwald,
a casualty in the Vietnam War.
The exhibit has 24 panels,
each about a JWV Post and
the man behind its name. The
exhibit also displays photo-
graphs and artifacts that illus-
trate the remarkable work of the
JWV and the Ladies Auxiliary.
The People Behind the Posts
will be on display through
summer in the Frances and
Joseph Fetter Gallery within
Temple Beth El, Bloomfield
Township. Appointments to
view the exhibit can be made at
info@mijewishheritage.org. The
exhibit is free of charge.

The People Behind the Posts opens at the
Joan Meyers Jampel Center for Michigan
Jewish Heritage.
