BARBARA
SHARON
ROETHER, 78,
passed away on
Monday, March
27, 2024.
Barbara was born on Aug.
31, 1945, to Harry Yellen
and Mary (Sinai) Yellen in
Detroit. Her parents were
immigrants who spoke
Yiddish as their primary
language.
On Aug. 11, 1968, she
married Robert H. Roether
at Temple Israel in Detroit.
Barb received her
bachelor’s degree from
Wayne State University and
worked most of her career
as a personal shopper of
designer fashion clothing.
She was a loving wife,

M

elvin Frederick
Annis, 93, died on
Dec. 24, 2023.
Mel was the eldest son
of Sonia and Harry Annis,
Russian and
Polish immigrants
who settled in
Detroit. They
owned a small
neighborhood
grocery store, and
Mel worked there
after school with his father.
After graduating from
Central High School in 1948,
Mel became a member of
Habonim, the Zionist youth
organization and became a
leader at the summer camp
Kinneret. He made many life-
long friends there.
In 1952, he spent a year in
Israel and studied business at
Hebrew University. When he
returned to Detroit, he got an
undergraduate degree in busi-
ness at Wayne State University,
followed by an M.B.A. from
the University of Michigan two
years later.
Mel’s first professional
job was with a large Detroit
accounting firm. But after
becoming a certified public
accountant, he struck out on
his own and started his own
accounting firm. When his son
David joined him in the family
business a few years later, the
Annis Group took advan-
tage of computer technology
to expand into other areas,
including property manage-
ment.
After Mel retired in his early
70s, he remained active in
many leisure activities with his
longtime partner, Pat, includ-
ing cross-country skiing, bird-

ing, biking and travel. They
made several trips to Israel to
visit his nephew Bradley and
his family. Every summer, they
went to Stratford, Ontario, to
see plays at the Shakespeare
Festival. Mel had fond memo-
ries of going to the Festival in
the mid-1950s when the plays
were still performed in a tent.
Mel and Pat’s favorite shared
activity was outdoor pho-
tography. Both were active
members of the Ann Arbor
Camera Club, and they took
many photo trips at home and
abroad with other club mem-
bers. Mel’s photos won many
awards at the Club competi-
tions.
He is survived by his
beloved wife, Patricia Cornett;
brother, Byron Annis; sons,
David and Ethan Annis;
grandsons, Joshua, Ari and
Zachary Bozann; daughter-in-
law, Andrea Bozoki; brother-
in-law, Michael Yurgalite;
nieces, Allison Christie, Molly
Moore, Pearl Laaveg and Rose
Annis-Sprankle; nephews,
Bradley and Charles Annis.
The family is grateful for
the care Mel received in his
last months from his loving
caregiver Charlotte Friday and
from Hospice of Michigan
nurses and aides.
A memorial service for Mel
will be held at Temple Israel in
West Bloomfield, on Sunday,
April 14, 1 p.m. A live-stream
option will be available on the
Temple website. Contributions
in Mel’s memory can be made
to the JARC Gelfond Family
Endowment Fund, Hospice of
Michigan or the Society for the
Protection of Nature in Israel
(natureisrael.org).

Family Man
