S

ure, it’s the bride’s big day.
But that doesn’t mean the
moms can’t shine, too.
The mothers-of-the-bride and
groom are no longer relegated
to the matronly corner — from
flowing gowns to architectural
cocktail frocks and everything in
between, the new MOB/G attire
has elements of all the trends
in fashion, and there are more
options than ever. Delicious
colors, tons of shimmer, big
stand-out bows and florals with
a focus on comfort and all the
sizes, dresses for mom deserve
pride of place in the wedding
party.
“One thing that I often hear

Mothers-of-the-bride
(and groom): Shine on!
MamaMia

from mothers-of-the-bride or groom is ‘I don’t
want to stand out too much,’ or ‘I don’t want to
outshine the bride,’” says Rachel Lutz, owner of
the Peacock Room in Detroit, known as a dress
destination for sizes 0-22 and unsurpassed
customer service. “No one will outshine the
bride, so don’t worry about that. But don’t be
afraid to dress in a celebratory way! If you
shine on the outside, it will show that you’re
shining with pride on the inside for the happy
couple.”
Lutz also likes to remind stepmothers that
they are mothers as well. “If they feel close to the
bride or groom, they deserve every bit as much
celebration as someone who is related by blood,”
she says. “Don’t feel that as a stepparent, you
should blend into the background.”
At the end of the day, Lutz says,
“Find something that makes
you feel beautiful, but also
that fits well. You want to be
focusing on the joyous day,
not tugging at your dress.
And once you find
your perfect dress,
don’t forget to get
a professional bra
fitting and session
with a seamstress.
It’ll make all the
difference!”
