n the face of adversity,
the human spirit has a
remarkable capacity to shine
brightly, bringing warmth and
hope to even the darkest corners
of our world. Meet fifth-grader
DeeDee Lefkowitz of Southfield,
a compassionate and determined
10-year-old girl whose baking
skills became a ray of hope for
the displaced community of
Kibbutz Zikim, located in the
south Israel. DeeDee single-
handedly raised $800.
On that fateful day, Oct. 7,
2023, Kibbutz Zikim endured
a heart-wrenching attack that
left its residents displaced and
seeking refuge. The sense of
loss and displacement weighed
heavily on the community’s
shoulders, but little did they
know that a young girl with
a heart as sweet as her treats
would become a part of their
source of solace.
DeeDee, who has a close
connection to a family from
Kibbutz Zikim, couldn’t stand
idly by in the face of such
tragedy. Instead, she chose to
channel her empathy and love
for baking into a powerful
initiative to support the
displaced families of Kibbutz
Zikim.
With determination in
her eyes and a feeling of
empowerment, DeeDee set out
to make a difference. Armed
with her apron, mixing bowls
and an array of delicious recipes,
she embarked on a journey to
create a variety of baked goods.
From cookies to brownies,
DeeDee poured her heart into
each delectable treat.
Her mission was not just to
satisfy sweet cravings but also
to bring a sense of normalcy
and joy to those who had
experienced profound loss. She
understood that sometimes,
a simple act of kindness can
be as comforting as a warm,

homemade cookie.
DeeDee’s baking marathon
turned into a community-wide
effort as her parents, Dr. Steven
and Rachie Lefkowitz, friends,
family and neighbors rallied
behind her cause. The town
was soon abuzz with the aroma
of freshly baked goodies and
the excitement of contributing
to a meaningful cause united
everyone.
As the orders poured in,
DeeDee’s kitchen transformed
into a bustling hub of love and
compassion. The community
responded enthusiastically, not
only purchasing the treats but
also contributing additional
funds to support the cause.
DeeDee’s initiative quickly
became a symbol of resilience,
showcasing the strength that
can emerge when a community
comes together.
The funds raised by DeeDee’s
baking extravaganza were
presented to the displaced
families of Kibbutz Zikim,
providing them with much-
needed support as they began
rebuilding their lives.
DeeDee’s gesture extended
far beyond the monetary value;
it sent a powerful message of
solidarity and hope, reminding
everyone that even in the
darkest times, acts of kindness
can illuminate the path forward.
Her uplifting story serves as
a testament to the incredible
impact that one person,
regardless of age, can have on
a community in need. Her
compassion and baking prowess
not only sweetened the lives of
those affected by tragedy but
also inspired others to believe
in the transformative power of
love, kindness, and a little bit of
sugar and flour.
