PURELY COMMENTARY

continued from page 4

Myra, who, without hesitation, helped
rearrange their upcoming vacation
plans so Larry, who was 10 years old
the last time the Lions won a cham-
pionship, could share this special
moment with his son.
It became a family affair. There were
enough tickets for Larry’s daughter,
Rabbi Rachel Shere, and his grandson
to fly out with Larry to the West Coast
and attend.
What a work of genius, I thought.
What do you do for the team that
doesn’t seem to ever have a “prayer” of
winning a championship? You take a
rabbi with you to the game! Oh well, it
was worth a shot.
My friends from The Michigan
WWII Legacy Memorial in Royal
Oak got on the Lions bandwagon, too.
They took inspiration from the Lions
jersey draped over the Spirit of Detroit
statue at the Coleman A. Young
Municipal Center downtown.
Prior to the first playoff game, board
members gathered at Memorial Park
at 13 Mile Road and Woodward and
adorned a Lions T-shirt shirt upon the
statue that we affectionately refer to
as “Joe.
” Joe is a depiction of a soldier

on the warfront sitting reading a letter
from home.
Among those joining in on the
fun at the park was my buddy, Jewish
WWII Veteran Art Fishman, who
posed with “Joe” for a celebratory
photo. Art turns 97 next Tuesday!
One final note. During this wonder-
ful Lions playoff run, I couldn’t help
but think of legendary Detroit News
sportswriter Jerry Green, of blessed
memory.
I had the privilege of getting to
know Jerry and write about his illustri-
ous career. (March 22, 2022 JN) That
included the covering of his 56th and
final consecutive Super Bowl game in
person in 2021. He was and still is, the
only daily sportswriter in history to
attend every championship game.
Jerry died a year to the day after my
column about him was published. Oh,
how I wish he could have witnessed
and written about the Lions’ most
recent success. Jerry, this column is
dedicated to you.
