how as students at Wayne State — they
graduated in December 2020 and June
2020, respectively — their Friday nights
were largely spent at Chabad of Greater
Downtown Detroit or Hillel of Metro
Detroit. On weeks there weren’t events, they
started bringing people into their rental
home in Woodbridge as part of HMD’s
Shabba-Tote program, which provided
students with money and materials to host
10 friends for a Shabbat dinner.
That all came to a halt with COVID, but
as the restrictions began to subside, they
became the Detroit Moishe Pod. Opened
in Detroit 2021, it was created as a hub for
Jewish Detroit. They started hosting larger

Shabbat dinners on a regular basis. “Shabbat
is a touchpoint for people,
” she says. “For
me, the most beautiful thing is for someone
to just have that point of connection and
how they want to celebrate that.
”
Now, as co-founders of Mezuzah, a
nonprofit organization focused on helping
advance Jewish population and creating
a walkable, equitable and vibrant Jewish
community in Detroit’s Northwest Goldberg
neighborhood, not far from Henry Ford
Hospital, they are deepening their roots,
says Bluth-Rosenberg. She also works as a
youth program coordinator at the Detroit
Phoenix Center, a nonprofit that provides
services for youth transitioning out of

homelessness and poverty.
And while they’ve always felt strongly
about creating community, it became an
even bigger priority for her and Jeremy,
director of marketing and community out-
reach for nonprofit bikeshare Mogo, after
Oct. 7. Following the tragedy in Israel, the
couple hosted a Shabbat dinner for a dozen
guests sponsored by Applebaum Family
Philanthropy.
“That gave us the chance to provide a
safe and engaging Jewish space for Shabbat
in NW Goldberg, where we live,
” she says.
“We felt that urgency for our community to
come together and provide that warmth and
comfort people have been looking for.
”

A typical Shabbat meal to share with others.
