ewish college students
considering a career
working in the nonprof-
it world, particularly within
the Jewish community, can
now apply for a paid sum-
mer 2024 internship through
Gesher Human Services. The
internships are also suitable for
students who intend to work
in the corporate for-profit
space but who would like to
learn more about the Jewish
community for future lay lead-
ership or volunteer work.
Gesher runs a program
called JOIN, an acronym for
the Jeannette and Oscar Cook
Jewish Occupational Intern
Program. JOIN started back
in 1973 and is open to Metro
Detroit residents who are
Jewish and full-time under-
graduate or graduate students.
Approximately 400 Jewish
students have benefited from
the internship, and many have
gone on to have careers in the
Metro Detroit Jewish commu-
nity in professions such as rab-
bis, educators and communal
leaders.
“This program is invalu-
able for aspiring community
leaders, providing a chance
to gain experience in so
many different branches of
the Jewish nonprofit world
in Metro Detroit,
” said JOIN
Coordinator and Business
Relations Specialist Ashley
Stone.
The summer-long program
offers the opportunity to gain
work experience, attend edu-
cational seminars and learn
about the Jewish community,
plus develop life-long connec-
tions. While students boost
their resume, they will earn
$4,200 during the eight-week
program. Internship work
is offered in several fields,
including nonprofit business
administration, marketing
and communications, human
services, program planning,
human resources, community
outreach and advocacy, and
development/fundraising.
Openings for JOIN are lim-
ited. Applications and initial
interviews must be completed
by March 1. For more infor-
mation, visit join.geserhmi.

STORY
Our
When you lend money to My people, to the poor
among you, do not act toward them as a creditor;
exact no interest from them.
Exodus 22:24
This sentence forms the basis for Hebrew Free
Loan’s mission. On Shabbat Mishpatim,
February 9-10, 2024, the words that underpin
one of our community’s longest-serving agencies will
be read during services in synagogues around the
world. Hebrew Free Loan is proud to have assisted
Jews in our community for more than 128 years,
based on this directive.
Our Board and professional staff carry out the
Mishpatim ideal every week when we provide
interest-free loans and caring, thoughtful guidance
to Jews across Michigan. We offer loans for a range
of personal, educational and small business needs,
helping to improve lives, support Jewish families,
and help our neighbors attain their goals.
What is even more important, the money that
goes to local families and businesses is generated
entirely from local contributions to our loan capital
fund. When you give to HFL, you breathe life into
the place you live. When you recommend HFL
to someone you know, you strengthen Jewish life
across the state. When you come to HFL as a
borrower, you trust us to support your needs. So
each time a student goes to college, a family home
gets a new roof, or a bright idea becomes a busi-
ness, the community is behind it.
