Among the Kronk boxers
she promoted were Thomas
“The Hitman” Hearns, Milton
McCrory, Duane Thomas and
Hilmer Kenty.
Kallen became a boxing
manager in 1988. Among the
boxers she managed in the
early years were champions
James Toney, Bronco McKart
and Tom Johnson.
She’s still a boxing manager.
Her current clients are Sam
Rizzo and Mykquan Williams.
“I was the antithesis of
someone entering the boxing
business ... a white Jewish
suburban housewife,” she said.
“But I’ve been successful all
these years by keeping my
nose clean, not burning any
bridges and treating everyone
with respect.”
Kallen was the subject of a
2004 movie, Against the Ropes,
starring Meg Ryan, and was
a regular on The Contender,
an NBC show that starred
Sylvester Stallone and Sugar
Ray Leonard.
She’s written books, done

speaking engagements on
a variety of topics and was
the commissioner of the
International Female Boxing
Association.
She’ll be 78 when she’s
inducted into the IBHOP,
and she has no intention of
slowing down.
“There are still doors to
open and mountains to climb,”
she said.

Birmingham’s Max Sasson is ‘Found Money’
in the Vancouver Canucks Organization

Will the next Jewish player in the NHL be Max Sasson?
Since signing with the Vancouver Canucks late last season as an undrafted
free agent following an outstanding career at Western Michigan University and
being assigned by the NHL team to the Abbotsford Canucks of the American
Hockey League, the 23-year-old center from Birmingham has become one of
Vancouver’s top prospects.
Through 24 games this season for Abbotsford, Sasson
had 10 goals and eight assists.
Here’s what The Hockey News had to say about
Sasson while listing him as No. 7 on a list of top 10
Vancouver prospects:
“Max Sasson has been found money for the Canucks
organization. In his first full season as a pro ... he has
become a crucial part of Abbotsford’s top six (forwards).
Whether it’s his ability to get shots on net or work in the
defensive zone, he has become an intriguing prospect
that fans should keep an eye on.”

Bowling League Gets Rolling After a
Break for Football
Competition resumed Monday after a holiday break in the weekly
Brotherhood-Eddie Jacobson B’nai B’rith bowling league. Jan. 8 was
the scheduled restart date, but there was a distraction.
“We canceled bowling that night because of the Michigan foot-
ball game,” said League Secretary Gary Klinger, referencing the
Michigan-Washington national championship game, won by the
Wolverines.
“So many guys in the league either went to the game (in Houston),
or were planning to stay home and watch it,” Klinger said.
The canceled week of bowling was added to the end of the
13-week second half of the season.
The Motley Crew made news in the 24-team league as 2023
ended. It was in first place in the Pete Weber Division with a league
best 33-9 record.
Pat Herron, a Motley Crue team member along with Ray Kach, Jay
Nitzkin, Mike Rosenfeld and Chris Lawler, bowled his season-high
game and series of 199 and 533 on Dec. 18. He was 119 pins over
average for the night, the most in the league.
The other division leaders heading into 2024 were Ruby’s Rollers
in the Mark Roth Division, X Marks the Spot in the Earl Anthony
Division and HEY Gary in the W.R. Williams Division.
The start of the year for the league also meant the resumption of
the International B’nai B’rith Bowling Association National Eliminator
Tournament, held remotely, and the beginning of the in-house Mark
Klinger Over-Average Tournament.
