Over the years, I’ve had the great fortune of meeting and interviewing many of the grand masters of Jewish comedy — Jackie Mason, Henny Youngman, Don Rickles, Marty Allen, Jerry Lewis, Harvey Korman, Soupy Sales and Shecky Green, who just passed away on New Year’s Eve at 97. It reminds me of what Dick Purtan used to say to me, “Funny is funny,” no matter what era of comedy you’re talking about. As stated on their website: “The National Comedy Center is the United States’ congressionally designated cultural institution dedicated to presenting the story of comedy and preserving its heritage for future generations.” Come to think of it, hearing the words congressionally and comedy in the same sentence is funny in itself!
