Berry is a former president of Shaarey Zedek. Blau said it’s always an honor to have personal accomplishments recognized by an organization. “However, with the recent attack on Israel and the rise in antisemitism that has ensued, it’s especially meaningful to me to be inducted into the Michigan Jewish Sports Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2023, ” Blau said. As for Relle, he said about his induction, “I’m honored to be part of a legacy of leaders who have dedicated themselves to excellence in their sports endeavors. ” The Pillars of Excellence recipients, Jewish News High School Athletes of the Year, Dr. Steven and Evelyn Rosen Stars of Tomorrow scholarship recipients, and the Shirley and Alvin Foon Humanitarian Award winner also were honored at the dinner. Grundstein and Steven Rosen, who died in 2016 at age 66, were teammates on the U-M track team for one year. Grundstein brought a present for Evelyn with him to the dinner. “I gave Evelyn a U-M team picture that has both Steve and me in it, ” Grundstein said. “I don’t think she had ever seen that photo. ” The Pillars of Excellence recipients were Detroit Maccabi coach and delegation head and 2019 and 2014 Detroit Maccabi Games chairperson Franci Silver, Oakland Press sportswriter Scott Burnstein, South Lyon East High School boys basketball coach Ron Levin and 43-year softball umpire Barry Lepofsky. Clay Hartje (Detroit Country Day), Noah Adamcyzk (Bloomfield Hills) and Ella Blank (Birmingham Groves) were the High School Athletes of the Year. The scholarship recipients were Merrick Michaelson (Frankel Jewish Academy), Marnie Jacobs (North Farmington), Jenner Leib (Orchard Lake St. Mary’s), Kaytlyn McPherson (Berkley) and Hartje.
