Near Eastern Studies. They
led a community dialogue
about the Israeli-Palestinian
conflict featuring a live Q&A
panel where students and
community members could
ask questions, and Lupovitch
and Khan answered with an
unbiased view.
Siegmann says that’s been
some of the only open dia-
logue between the pro-Israel
and anti-Israel sides on cam-
pus.
Rather than hosting rallies
themselves, campus Hillel and
other Jewish campus organi-
zations have been trying to
bring back a sense of normal-
cy for students, holding events
like they always would.
HMD held a community
Shabbat dinner with students
from all of HMD’s six schools
and has offered communi-
ty-building activities focusing
on Jewish unity and pride.
WSU grad student Jared
Pazner believes the best way
to deal with hostility toward
Jewish people is to show
strength and unity between
Jewish people.
“
And it’s especially import-
ant to me to make sure I have
a mezuzah on my front door,
and for people to know I’m
proud to be Jewish. Any fear
being projected on campus
isn’t going to force me to hide
or shut down; it’s just going
to make me become stronger
with my faith,
” he said.
U-M Hillel has offered
additional support and
programing for students
including ongoing pastoral
care, counselors from Jewish
Family Service doing sup-
port groups twice a week, an
expanded course on combat-
ing antisemitism, and simply
keeping the building open for
snacks, soup and hot bever-
ages in a space where Jewish
students can come and feel
safe.
“I do feel like this has been
a moment of very strong com-
munity across other Jewish
organizations on campus,
”
U-M junior Sari Rosenberg
said.
In East Lansing, MSU Hillel
and other Jewish organiza-
tions have worked around
the clock to support Jewish
Spartans as they grieve for the
lives lost abroad and grapple
with the spike in antisemi-
tism.
“We have advocated for the
administration to condemn
antisemitic events, answered
calls from students late at
night who need support as
they process the last few
months, and have created
opportunities for students to
connect with one another in
times of need,
” Robyn Hughey
said.
MSU Hillel has been “won-
derful” throughout this time
in supporting Jewish stu-
dents, Matthew Zivian says,
as has the university’s Serling
Institute for Jewish Studies
and Modern Israel, which he
says has been key in starting
dialogue between Jewish and
Muslim students on campus,
trying to reach an under-
standing of one another’s
perspective.
Zivian, vice president of
external affairs for MSU’s
Jewish Student Union, said
these past two months have
only strengthened his Jewish
pride.
“Before Oct. 7, I’
d say I was
unapologetically Jewish. And
since Oct. 7, I’m still unapolo-
getically Jewish,
” Zivian said.
“There is nothing anybody
can say or do that will make
us stop being proud to be
Jewish, especially on college
campuses.
