itzi Joan Jacobs,
92, of West
Bloomfield, died
on Nov. 19, 2023.
She was born and
raised in Detroit
to Harry and Mary
Goodman. She
was their only
child. She had an
idyllic childhood
surrounded by
multiple family
members and
friends, with frequent trips
to visit family in Chicago and
vacations in South Haven.
Her world changed on her
eighth birthday when she
woke up to learn that Hitler
had invaded Poland and
World War II had officially
begun. She never forgot the

shock of that day, the day
she first became aware of the
serious and frightening parts
of life.
After graduating
from Central High
School she attended
Michigan State
University, where
she studied teaching;
she later worked for
Hazel Park Schools
for 30 years, teaching
art, English, the gifted
program and theater.
She married Saul (Sy)
Jacobs in 1951 and soon
moved to Oak Park. They
had two boys, Mitchell and
Mark.
Mitzi was the ultimate
people person, always
welcoming others with

kindness and a warm, bubbly
smile. Her home was always
a creative and loving space
for her extended family,
friends and her children’s
friends. She often hosted
some of her students, who
loved doing projects at her
house and made a point of
staying in touch with their
favorite teacher. She was a
student of literature, poetry,
the arts and Shakespeare;
she made sure her sons
and students were exposed
to anything that would
enrich their knowledge and
character.
She was an accomplished
artist who created hundreds
of creative items that are still
displayed at various offices,
stores and homes throughout

Metropolitan Detroit. She
was the ultimate den mother,
the perfect person to help
with crafts, school projects
or a Halloween costume.
She will be remembered as
a big personality who lived
a happy life and positively
touched the lives of countless
people.
Mrs. Jacobs is survived
by her sons; daughter-in-
law, Linda; grandsons, Scott
(Beth), Brandon (Jess);
great-granddaughters, Beth,
Brooke, Winnie and Lucy.
Exactly one week after her
death, a new great-grandson,
Owen, was born; he will bear
a Hebrew name to honor his
late, memorable and forever
beloved great-grandmother.
L’dor v’dor.
