bright, cool, D.C. autumn 
afternoon, spirited and united 
(no airline pun intended), we 
talked, we laughed, we took 
pictures, we sang “
Am Yisrael 
Chai.” 
By now, the rally had 
ended. Many of us had live-
streamed it on our phones, 
listened to the speakers, 
and had heard the original 
60,000-person estimate grow 
to 90,000 and rising. Capitol 
police would ultimately 
give an estimate of 290,000 
participants, not including 
those of us who were there, 
but not at the Mall. 
Somewhat disheartened, 
but nonetheless undeterred, 
we were told to reboard the 
plane, as the return flight 
crew had been summoned 
early to get us back to 

Detroit. We garnered what 
news was available related 
to our dilemma, from those 
back in Detroit, from my 
family in New Jersey, who 
had come by bus and made 
it to the mall, trying to make 
sense of it all. Our Federation 
team leaders, notably 
Dennis Bernard, provided 
us with helpful and useful 
information. 
And as we flew home, I 
don’t know that any of us 
felt short-changed. On the 
contrary, we were energized 
and invigorated, we Jews 
and Zionists. We talked and 
we laughed, and we took 
pictures and we sang … AM 
YISRAEL CHAI!
