obert Schweiger, 102,
of Bradenton, Fla.,
died Nov. 15, 2023.
Robert arrived in Detroit in
1939 with his beloved parents,
Hugo and Jolan. They had left
Austria, their home,
their lives, their
possessions. When
they fled Austria,
their destination was
Mexico, with visas
secured from the
Mexican consulate.
Bob, his parents, and
other family members
were among the 21 Jews who
boarded the S.S. Orinoco.
In October of 1938, after
crossing the ocean and end-
ing up at Mexico’s shores, the
Mexican government turned
all 21 away, saying that the
visas were forgeries and that
the ship should return them to
Europe.
After being accepted by
Cuba, the group spent close to
nine months in the country,
not speaking the language,
restricted by the threat of
deportation if they worked
and wondering if they were
going to be sent to their deaths
in Europe or if there would be
a country that would ultimate-
ly welcome them with open
arms. That country was the
United States.
Arriving in Detroit pen-
niless, Bob learned English
by watching and rewatching
movies at the theater. He loved
his adopted country. Bob soon
met his future wife, Shirley, at
a dance, and that was the start
of their 77+-year love story.
After having fled the
religious persecution and

Holocaust in Europe, Bob
joined the U.S. Army. Shirley
traveled to the West Coast by
train to see him before he was
sent off to the war. They found
a rabbi, who married them in
exchange for cleaning
his house. A copy of
the telegram they sent
announcing their mar-
riage hung proudly on
a wall in their home.
On D-Day, Bob
landed on Omaha
Beach, Normandy. He
then went on to help
liberate Paris. His medals were
presented to him later in life,
and those sat in a case along
with an American flag on a
shelf across from the mar-
riage/elopement telegram.
At 102, he was still with
it. He was sharp and could
remember names, cars people
drove and the smallest and
largest details. Until a few
months ago, he was still driv-
ing. When his license expired,
the state of Florida renewed
it, and he told his family that
if Florida said he could drive
to 107, he would try to live
to be 107 to get full use of his
license. He lived on his own
and had the energy of some-
one half his age.
He would go to work every
day. He was constantly learn-
ing, giving his great-grand-
daughter Hannah Google
Earth tours of Vienna and
other European cities; he
spent time FaceTiming with
great-grandchildren Auggie
and Saxon and giving out
advice. Lots of advice.
Nearly four years to the day
that Shirley passed away, he
