SUPPORT OF THE JWV
Last year, Rachel became one
of the youngest members to
join the Jewish War Veterans
Department of Michigan
(JWV-MI). Her fellow JWV
comrades came out in full
force to support her and
participate in the Veterans
Shabbat service at CSZ,
which included the depart-
ment returning as a sponsor
of the program.
The program opened with
Jewish war veterans and their
family members receiving
a rousing welcome as they
marched down the center
aisle of the sanctuary. They
were led into the service
by the City of Southfield
Color Guard and JWV
Marc Manson who carried
the JWV Department of
Michigan flag.
JWV-MI Sr. Vice
Commander Bill Glogower,
Judge Advocate Donald
Wagner, and Don Schenk,
Commander, Lt. Raymond
Zussman Post 135, all partic-
ipated in the program. Each
are members of CSZ and sit
on its Veterans Shabbat com-
mittee.
In his welcoming remarks
Wagner, said: “Our Jewish
heritage for centuries has
been built by transmitting
and remembering, l’dor v’dor.
Establishing and maintaining
the legacy of the Jewish War
Veterans is not a burden, but
an honor, a privilege and a
sacred obligation of all of us.”

A FUTURE OF SERVICE
Home safe from her deploy-
ment, Rachel will continue
to serve out her three-year
commitment with the
Michigan Army National
Guard, which includes

reporting for duty one week-
end a month. She is also in
the process of enrolling in
college with a focus on intel-
ligence operations studies.
“Since the age of 12, I have
wanted to serve,” Rachel
said in her closing remarks
during the Veterans Shabbat
service. “I found gratitude
almost every day in Syria for
the ability I had to do so. I
love the United States with
every fiber of my being. It is
the land of opportunity and
that is what my grandpar-
ents, parents and myself have
received. Thank God for
America’s continued support
of Israel and the Jews.
“There were numerous
times in Syria that I could
have left my desk earlier to
go play soccer, workout more
or watch movies, but I didn’t
chase happiness. I wanted to
do everything in my power
to do what I felt was right.
“I was lucky to have the
support of my whole family.
Without their support, these
past 27 months would have
been almost impossible. I
can proudly say that I don’t
regret a single second of my
time in Syria.”
Given the misdirected
messages resonating today
out of many college campus-
es, Rachel’s Veterans Shabbat
remarks were a breath of
fresh air, coming from a
young woman with a real-
world perspective. She is
— as Rabbi Starr previously
stated — “a light in the midst
of a dark world.”
Rachel exited the bimah at
Shaarey Zedek to a standing
ovation.
