OUR COMMUNITY

C

ongregation Shaarey
Zedek in Southfield
will host a family
Chanukah celebration on
Sunday, Dec. 10, from 3
to 5:30 p.m. The entire
community is invited.
The event will feature
performances by the Detroit
Circus Company, many
interactive and educational
activity stations for par-
ticipants of all ages, a
community candlelighting —
and, of course, music, latkes
and donuts.
On hand, will be the
Detroit Circus Company’s
“dazzling circus-style
performers” who specialize
in high-flyer aerial antics,
fire-dancing and fire-eating,
stilt-walking, acrobatics,
contortion, juggling and “feats
of mind-bending strength and
acro-balance,” according to its
website.

Program organizers
say the event offers an
opportunity for Jews of
every denomination to come
together for an inclusive,
pluralistic, nonpolitical,
family-friendly celebration.
“As we continue to stand
with Israel during this
devastating and tragic
time, we recognize that it is
essential for us to continue
to come together as a Jewish
community. Any opportunity
to strengthen our Jewish
bond, with each other and
with the Jewish people in
Israel and around the world,
is important now more than
ever,” said Steve
Ingber, chief
executive officer
of the Jewish
Federation of
Detroit.
Congregations
and partner

organizations will host
stations offering dreidel
games, arts and crafts,
face painting and more.
They include Adamah,
Adat Shalom Synagogue,
Aish Detroit, B’nai Israel
Synagogue, Congregations
Beth Ahm, Beth Shalom,
B’nai Moshe, Shaarey Zedek

and Shir Tikvah, Frankel
Jewish Academy, Hadassah
Greater Detroit, Hillel Day
School, The J and JFamily,
Jewish Federation of Detroit
and the Michigan branch of
United Synagogue Youth.
DJ Phreddy Nosanwisch
will provide
festive simchah
music throughout
the event, which
will conclude with
a special candle-
lighting using a
large menorah in
the William Saulson Pavilion
at the back of the synagogue.
“Each candle will honor
and represent people in
Detroit who are connected to
Israel,” said Alaine Ashkenazi,
director of
engagement at
Shaarey Zedek.
These include
parents of Lone
Soldiers currently
serving in the
Israel Defense
Forces.
The charge to attend is
$18 per family of two adults
and children ($8 for single
tickets), and pre-registration
is required. Registration can
be done online at jlive.app/
events/5771.
