Single Family Living

Our Mission: For 10 years, Single Family Living has strived to focus on combating
youth illiteracy from single families throughout the Metro-Detroit communities. Just
like the needs of the communities and schools we service expanded, so has our
mission to help the youths. Our mission is to empower, mentor, and inspire children
from single parent families. SFL’s 4-tier plan equips youth and their parents to
overcome functional illiteracy; understand mental health (trauma) awareness; attain
in-demand career development; and achieve affordable housing. quality education,
due to economic and/or social barriers. We earned several awards in educational
services, including the Detroit Spirit Award. Our vision is to reduce the education
gap that stalks our children living in poverty-stricken single-parent homes.

What’s New?
Single Family Living is open to partnering with key Detroit corporate sponsors
to expand the development of H.E.R.O. (Helping Everyone Reach Outstanding)
program.
We are open to collaborating with other organizations that believe in our cause to
help youths and their families. SFL is leading an initiative that will confront barriers to
resources for single parents.
We strive to improve self-esteem and quality of life in the single parent communities by
advocating housing ownership, affordable daycare, free or low cost tutoring services
for afterschool and summer, and maintaining mental health awareness with flexible
access to the services for the youth throughout Detroit Tri-County Metro areas.

WHAT WE DO (250 words max)

For 10 years, Single Family Living has strived to focus on combating youth illiteracy from
single families throughout the Metro-Detroit communities. Just like the needs of the
communities and schools we service expanded, so has our mission to help the youths. Our
mission is to empower, mentor, and inspire children from single parent families. SFL's 4-tier
plan equips youth and their parents to overcome functional illiteracy; understand mental
health (trauma) awareness; attain in-demand career development; and achieve affordable
housing.

Single Family Living (SFL) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in the year
2013 in Michigan by a single parent, Jeri Hunley (Founder). SFL is devoted to helping
the youth from single parent homes; learning the importance of education, positive
mentorship, and STEM courses by providing parenting workshops for single parents &
youth in grades K-12. We have hosted over 8500 events and impacted thousands of
youth with books, clothes, tutoring, menstrual products, housing, and food throughout
the Detroit Metro area. During the pandemic we shared our expertise and collaborated
with organizations throughout the nation to create strategies to support single parents in
crisis. Single Family Living is committed to serving those who need it most: children in
under-resourced communities who do not have access to quality education, due to
economic and/or social barriers. We earned several awards in educational services,
including the Detroit Spirit Award. Our vision is to reduce the education gap that stalks
our children living in poverty-stricken single-parent homes.
