NOVEMBER 23 • 2023 | 35 J N seen the post and all who told her the same thing: “Someone’s looking for your brother!” Karen reached out to Beverly and immediately picked up her brother’s book, which was in pristine condition. Forty-five years and two days later, the long-lost bar mitzvah book was reunited with his very happy owner — who, it turned out, actually goes by his other given name, Harry. “I was so happy that we found him at last — and he was thrilled to get his book back!” Beverly said. FURTHER DISCOVERIES In a fun twist of fate, when the two families chatted, they discovered that they’d lived in the same neighborhood many years ago, around the corner from each other. “Robert and Karen had even attended the same ele- mentary school in Oak Park as my kids, although they were in different classes,” said Beverly. “We’re so overwhelmed and touched that Beverly was so relentless in searching for Harry,” Karen said. “She did such a mitzvah by reuniting my brother with such a trea- sured book.” And, of course, one good turn ripples into another … Karen contacted Ann Zaron again, got to talking, then Ann looked through her database and found the yahr- zeit plaques that belonged to Karen’s grandparents, Harry (whom her brother Robert was named after) and Ann Green. So, not only was the bar mitzvah book returned, but two yahrzeit plaques were taken out of storage and returned to a very emotional family member, too! And just to make this whole story more fun, it turned out Karen Simon and Ann Zaron are related to each other by marriage! Anyone interested in checking to see if their rel- ative’s yahrzeit plaques are available for pickup can email B’nai David cemetery at bnaidcem@gmail.com or look up the Facebook page, Friends of B’nai David.
