that Bernstein will soon be
going with Al Arabiya to
Saudi Arabia — a United
Nations member state
that doesn’t recognize
Israel — to create a feature
presentation on the life of a
disabled Jewish American.
“It’s going to really
highlight in a positive
way a Jewish person
doing a positive thing,”
Bernstein explains. “There’s
no politics, [there’s no
religion]. We’re just going
to spend time with people
that have severe disabilities
and face the biggest
challenges in life.”

As another country that
Bernstein says “doesn’t
have the greatest relations
with the United States,”
the Michigan Supreme
Court justice embarked on
a tour in Turkey to meet
people with disabilities and
identify opportunities to
improve their quality of
life.
His work was featured on
Turkish economic media
channel EKOTURK TV,
where Bernstein discussed
accessibility, especially in
an ancient country where
many streets and sidewalks
are original cobblestone
and pose difficulty for
people with disabilities.
However, these three
efforts barely scratch the
surface of Bernstein’s vast
work across the globe
promoting disability rights
and forging relationships
with various countries.
Bernstein has also visited
China, India, Australia,
Italy and soon-to-be
Egypt, where Bernstein
says a staggering 30% of
the population is disabled
— and these are only the
reported numbers.
“It’s a huge part of who
I am and what my job is,”
he says of his work outside
of the court. “This is why
I feel blessed to have a
disability and to be able to
do this type of work.”
