extended friendships.
“Cancer is not a secret,”
said Kalef, author of “Cancer
Is a Pain in the Butt!” and
whose earlier writing had
been in column form, taking
subjects from her former
career responsibilities as a
space organizer.
“People should talk about
it — what it feels like and
how different modalities
affect people differently. I
have been president of the
Meer Council, and people
have been so supportive and
praying for me.”
Larry Aronoff, “A Travelin’
Man,” had a long marriage,
a long career
as owner of a
medical supply
business and a
long membership
with a boating
organization. He
is happy with
the way events
worked out for him and his
family and is glad of travels
they shared. He also points
out that people should know
life is a gamble.
“It wasn’t hard to write
this,” said Aronoff, whose

words are upbeat and
inspiring. “I have a good
memory.”

DOCUMENTARIES
TO BE SHOWN
The movies being shown
at the event are likely
to awaken memories in
audience members. One is
Young at Heart, which tells
about the romance shared
by filmmaker Sue Marx’s
father (Louis Gothelf) and
Reva Shwayder-Gothelf
when both were in their
80s.
Death-Metal Grandma
recalls the life of a late
Holocaust survivor and
aspiring heavy metal singer
in her senior years, Inge
Ginsberg. Wendy’s Shabbat
chronicles older adults
enjoying hamburgers and
fries at Wendy’s while saying
Shabbat prayers.
Jack Lessenberry and
author Bill Haney, who
wrote the foreword for the
essay anthology, will share
remembrances about the late
filmmaker Sue Marx.
The West Bloomfield and
Oak Park facilities that are

part of Jewish Senior Life
and will benefit from the
event include those that
offer independent living,
assisted living and memory
care. Included are Meer
Apartments, Hechtman
Apartments, Fleischman
Residence/Blumberg Plaza,
Brown Memory Care
Pavilion, Prentis Apartments,
Teitel Apartments, Coville
Apartments and Coville
Memory Care Community.
Robinson, who also gives
her time to writing projects
in other settings, had a good
memory about an anthology
writing experience program

that gave her the inspiration
to pursue this book in a four-
month time span.
“Everybody was surprised
we got as many people to
participate, but I wasn’t,”
Robinson said. “We have
had a ton of participation.
Whoever signed up and got
me a first draft was in.
“For Jewish Senior Life,
the projects have been such
a natural fit. This one bridge
connects our residents to
the rest of the community. I
plan to put together a how-to
so other organizations can
do this kind of thing, but I
would tell them to plan on a
year to do it.”
