home,” he said. “The family
deserves it. Gilbert deserves it.”
There is hope that one day
soon the DPAA, the Defense
POW/MIA Accounting
Agency, will be able to iden-
tify Gilbert’s remains through
DNA testing, samples of which
were provided by family mem-
bers in 2017.
The DPAA continues to
actively pursue closure for all
families, which to date still
includes more than 81,000
Americans missing from
WWII, the Korean War, Cold
War and Vietnam War. And
when that day comes the
GLNC will provide Gilbert
with his final resting place.
And there is hope.
On Oct. 27, one grateful
family was the beneficiary
of the closure they had long
sought. I happened to speak
with GLNC’s Crawford on
that day, when he informed
me he had just conducted a
burial with full military honors
for the remains of Technical
Sergeant Leonard John Detloff.
He was killed in action on
Nov. 10, 1944.
A GLNC Facebook post
said, “His remains were orig-
inally recovered and buried
as ‘Unknown’ in the Lorraine
American Cemetery in France.
On May 5, 2023, the DPAA
was able to finally notify the
family so that they could, after
many years, finally place him
in honored rest.”
REMEMBERING GILBERT
The Sept. 6 ceremony for
Gilbert at GLNC was not the
first time they had gathered
to honor him. His late brother
did extensive research over
the years, the results of which
were shared at a special family
gathering about 20 years ago.
He wanted to make sure that
generations to come knew who
Gilbert was.
A cousin of Gilbert’s
described an amazing moment
that happened immediately
following the ceremony. “We
remembered Gilbert served in
the ‘Rainbow Division,’ part
of the 42nd Infantry. After the
ceremony was done, a double
rainbow appeared in the sky.
It was quite something to wit-
ness.”
