t’s been a great five
years for the Kosher
Ribs team in the Inter-
Congregational Men’s Club
Summer Softball League’s
fall league.
The Kosher Ribs have
played in the fall league’s
playoff championship game
five straight seasons and
won three times, including a
14-10 victory over the Jeters
on Oct. 15 in this year’s title
game.
It’s a particularly
impressive stretch because
the weekly fall league is set
up to avoid dynasties. The
six league teams are made
up of players from different
congregations, unlike the
summer league, with the
goal of competitive balance.
“Ideally, everyone goes 5-5
(in the fall league’s regular
season) and every game is
a one-run game. Of course,
that will never happen, but
that’s the goal,” said Mitch
Kline, a fall league organizer
along with Matt Bassin and
Victor Uzansky.
Kline was happy to report
that the top three teams in
the regular-season standings
this fall were separated by
just one game.
And the third-place
Mensches, a bottom team
last year, lost their first two
regular-season games this
year then won seven of eight
heading into the playoffs.
But Marble Rye and The
Sandlot, the fifth- and sixth-
place teams, respectively,
each won just one regular-
season game this fall, “so we
didn’t do a good job putting
together those teams,” Kline
said.
Kline is the player/
manager of Kosher Ribs.
One of his players is
Corey Slutsky, who has been
on the team since 2017.
Slutsky said there’s a reason
why Kosher Ribs has done
so well on the diamond the
last five years, and it has
little to do with softball.
“The core of our team has
been together for years. We
know each others’ kids, we
go out to dinner, and we
joke around on the bench,”
Slutsky said.
“When someone new joins
our team, which happens
every season, he quickly
