the army, but we’re not.
“There are a lot of people in
the army from Detroit, and I
feel for all their mothers whom
I’m friends and relatives with,”
she continued. “Some of them
I’ve known since they were
kids … Really, all these kids
are all of our kids. And yes, it’s
the biggest, strongest army in
the world … but it’s made up
of our kids.”
Physically, Kresch family
members are OK but, like the
rest of the country and world
Jewry, they are in deep shock
and mourning.
“Everyone knows someone
who was murdered or kid-
napped. Entire communities
were decimated; there has
been funeral after funeral after
funeral,” Susie said bleakly.
“I’ll never forget Holocaust
survivor Manny Mittleman of
blessed memory, telling me
how confusing and hard it
was looking the devil in the
eye and discovering he had
a human face … We want to
believe in good and can’t com-
prehend evil, but here we are
once again forced to see it in
front of our eyes.”
But then Susie’s voice
changed as she described what
she saw at the airport when she
was picking up her daughter,
Atara (see page 28). Hundreds
of reservists arriving from all
around the world, leaving their
lives, willingly jumping at the
chance to do whatever they
can to defend the homeland.
A nonstop stream of donated
supplies from all over the dias-
pora for the heroic soldiers —
“our kids” — on the front lines.
Constant chessed being
done to help those who are
displaced and aching. There’s
determination, love and hope,
a swelling pride and unity.
“The resolve and strength of
our people to come together,
united as one nation, as one
family, here and from all over
the world, to help our soldiers
and all the families in need, is
just beautiful,” Susie said.
She held her new grandson
close after a heartbreaking
day of giving free chiropractic
adjustments to shattered peo-
ple who were displaced. “May
we be a light unto the nations
and may good destroy evil
once and for all so our brave
soldiers can all come home
soon.”
Grandparents Ari and Marlin Jaffe, and Susie and Ed Kresch flank the
parents, Ben and Talya Jaffe, with new baby Yonatan Pinchas.
