our aged, men and women
and children all who were
wounded at the hands of the
cruel enemy. Illuminate your
presence for them and send
them a complete healing,
speedily in our days.
God, full of mercy and com-
passion, provide tranquil rest
on the wings of the Divine
Presence, for the souls of Your
nation, men, women, and
children, murdered in cold
blood, their blood spilled like
water. May their eternal rest
be in Gan Eden.
Lord, our God, comfort the
mourners of Your nation, heal
the broken-hearted and bind
up their wounds,
Turn Your countenance,
oh God, to those dwelling in
our land, from the border
of Lebanon to the Egyptian

desert; and spread over them
Your shelter of peace, grant
them safety, tranquility, and
security. Send Your light and
truth to the leaders of the
State of Israel, her ministers
and advisers, and grace them
with Your good counsel.
Speedily bring your final
redemption to the world,
when “death will vanish in
life eternal”, when You will
“wipe away tears from all
faces”, when “nation will not
lift up sword against nation,
neither will they learn war
anymore … and the earth will
be filled with the knowledge
of God as the waters cover the
oceans.”
Amen.

The current concern is
army gear needed for the
additional 300,000 soldiers.
Last week, my daughter-in-
law, Yael, picked up helmets
from a supplier needed for
our son Mataan’s unit, and
one of his friends (also a
soldier) delivered them to
his unit. There is now a
coordinated effort to help
raise funds for these mil-
itary items on this newly
created FundMe site that
Yael sent us: https://my.is-
raelgives.org/en/fundme/
ImmediateTacticalNeeds.
Also worthy of funds is
United Hatzalah (https://
israelrescue.org/), which is a
volunteer-based motorcycle
emergency medical service.
Our Jewish family/people-
hood is small and united (in
Israel and in the diaspora),

and everyone knows some-
one who has been gravely
affected.
I know many of you
attended the Detroit com-
munity gathering at Shaarey
Zedek Synagogue. Sadly, I
heard that our new com-
munity’s Israeli emissary’s
brother was killed in the war.
May the memories of
the nearly 1,000 senseless
deaths be a blessing unto all
who knew and loved them.
May this war produce a sil-
ver lining of future peace.
“No more war, no more
bloodshed.”— Menachem
Begin, November 1977

“This is really a dream.
We genuinely see community in this house.”

Chella Bluth and Jeremy Rosenberg are no strangers to
life in the city limits. While living in their previous house
in Detroit’s Woodbridge neighborhood, the couple
championed city living to other young adults. Now, freshly
ensconced in the Northwest Goldberg neighborhood,
they live in a renovated home they found while seeking
connection, returning a Jewish presence to an area
named after Detroit’s first Jewish School Board member.
“We hope more Jews will follow us here, but moving
here is not about displacing the people who are already
invested. We want to grow the neighborhood together,
alongside each other,” Jeremy said. “That’s the history
of this area, and it should be the future too.”
“There’s neighbor engagement here, lots of activity,
and a welcoming feel,” said Chella. “This is a place
where we can plant roots, be active with our neighbors,
and we can open our doors to all.”
The couple bought an existing home that was
being renovated, touring it when it was basically just
studs, and trusting local community development group
NW Goldberg Cares with its completion. Hebrew Free
Loan and the Move-in Detroit loan program, Powered by
Peggy Daitch and Peter Remington, were an important
part of the process, Jeremy said. “The supportive and
caring people at HFL made things easy, and the loan
helped us cross the construction finish line.”
“Think of it this way: this kitchen we’ll cook in and
use to host Shabbat dinners and welcome friends and
neighbors, that’s HFL,” Chella said. “It’s our greater
community helping us establish our own community.”
