(AHA) companies in the
United States; AHA, he says,
helped spark the “aesthetic
revolution.”
It was also around this
time that Milstein developed
and patented the drug
Atralin, a unique version
of Retin-A that was just as
effective but without the side
effects of irritation, itching
and peeling.
After initially working
as C&M Pharmacal’s
sales director, Milstein
succeeded his father as
president of the company
in 1985. Fueled by Glytone’s
success, C&M Pharmacal
was acquired by Genesis
Pharmaceutical in 1998.
The company’s acquisition
proved a financial windfall
for Milstein, who decided to
use a portion of the proceeds
from his new-found wealth
to help those less fortunate.
THE PHILANTHROPIC
FUND
With the monies, he and
his wife established a
Philanthropic Fund, through
the Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit, whose
primary purpose is to award
and assist those in need
and to promote academic
excellence.
The Hebrew Free Loan
Society, the Fresh Air
Society, the Crohn’s & Colitis
Foundation, the kosher
food bank Yad Ezra and the
Allied Jewish Campaign are
all among the organizations
receiving support through
annual disbursement of the
fund. Milstein credits his
cousin, Jonathan D. Lowe,
the director of charitable gift
planning at Federation, for
his help and guidance with
the fund.
The fund is also
responsible for supporting
scholarships to psychology
students at Palomar College
in San Marcos, California,
where Milstein’s brother,
Louis, teaches psychology
and initiated the scholarship;
Milstein says another
scholarship at MiraCosta
College in Oceanside,
California, also started by
