EARLY LESSONS IN
CHARITY
For Mark, who grew up “very
poor” and shared a small home
in Detroit with 13 family mem-
bers, including several who were
sick and without health insur-
ance, her bubbie, Rachel, still
made it a mission to give back.
Though the family had little
money to spare, and sometimes
no food, Mark recalls a tzedakah
box in her home at all times.
On Sundays, Mark would
stand in front of a bakery on
Elmhurst and Linwood with her
grandmother, who was crippled
with osteoporosis, collecting
money for Jewish charities.
“I grew up knowing that part
of life is giving back,
” Mark
recalls. “I don’t just give money
[now]. I give my time because I
feel that’s really what’s import-
ant.

Mark is also no stranger to
hardship. While she now holds
several honorary degrees, she
was never able to attend college.
She had her first baby at 17 and
found herself a widow at 36, but
her Weight Watchers business
allowed her to extend opportu-
nities to thousands of women,
giving many the education that
she couldn’t pursue herself.

FINDING INSPIRATION
INSIDE
Still, Mark has never been
deterred by life’s challenges.
Instead, she uses her experi-
ence to motivate others and
starts every day by saying good
morning to herself in the mir-
ror. “I’ll say, ‘Good morning,
Florine!’” she explains. “‘You’re
so lucky.’”
It’s one of many messages
shared among others through-
out her podcast, “Today’s
Takeaway with Florine Mark,”
which is celebrating three years
of operation and some 160
episodes released thus far. Each
week, Mark interviews celebrity
guests and everyday individu-
als about physical and mental

health, relationships and more.
The podcast is sponsored by
Gardner White and has heard
speakers from longevity expert
Dr. Joel Kahn to award-win-
ning journalist and news
anchor Sandra Ali.
Through the “Remarkable
YOU” motivational tour,
Mark shares with others how
to motivate yourself to have a
better life every single day. “Not
yesterday, you can’t do anything
about that,” she says. “Not
tomorrow, it’s not here. You
have today.”
Mark also spends much of
the talks discussing gratitude
and encouraging others not to
be so hard on themselves.
“What I do is I take a piece
of paper,” she says, and write
down “these are the things I
like about myself, and these
are the things I don’t like about
myself.” Chances are, people
like much more about them-
selves than dislike.
As her signature trademark,
Mark signs every note with
“love, love, love.” She hopes that
the small gesture will bring a
smile to someone’s day.
“There’s so much hate going
on in the world,” she says. “We
have to have peace, and I just
like to remind people how
important love, love, loving
yourself and loving other peo-
ple is.”
