Through the Centennial Fund, Marshall and Rhoda Tobin
Give the Gift of a Jewish Future

“It affords us great pleasure and pride to be able to
support the Detroit Jewish community,
” said Rhoda and
Marshall Tobin, who were both born and raised in Detroit.
The Tobins have been married for more than 71 years and
raised their 5 children in the area with the hope “that it
continues to improve and endure endlessly.” Marshall still
remembers the blue and white JNF box in the kitchen of
his childhood home. Though his family lived in humble
circumstances, he was always taught to help other Jews,
starting with a donation to the tzedakah box every Friday
before their Shabbat dinner. Together Rhoda and
Marshall have maintained this core Jewish value
throughout a lifetime of support for the Jewish community.
They enjoy an active Jewish life—they’ve been members
of Congregation Shaarey Zedek for over 60 years—and
love to travel, but their commitment to supporting their
fellow Jews remains essential to them. “Jews take care of
Jews and that’s the bottom line,
” Marshall notes. “If we
don’t, who will?” Now, with their Benefactor-level
donation to the Centennial Fund, Rhoda and Marshall

will continue to make a difference in the lives of others for
generations to come.
The Centennial Fund is the central vehicle for ensuring
the long-term security of our community. Fostering
Jewish life, especially among young people, is a core
priority of the Fund. The Tobin’s Centennial commitment
will support a wide variety of Jewish Identity and
Education initiatives at The J (the JCC), which includes
programs such as JFamily, JLearn, Opening the Doors
and the Detroit Jewish Book and Film Festivals. It will
also support the 2024 Maccabi Games, PJ Library and
Jlive. Their generosity will be celebrated with the
dedication of the Marshall and Rhoda Tobin Cultural Arts
Wing at the D. Dan and Betty Kahn Building on the
Applebaum Campus. “The J is the hub of Jewish life,
”
Marshall says. “The more children that walk through the
doors, the more that are aware of their Jewish identity.”
The Tobins are committed to building a strong Jewish
community for the next century. With this meaningful
Centennial gift, they are accomplishing that mission.
