Two Cousins Win
Seven Swimming
Medals at Maccabi
Cousins Alexandra and Megan
Zelmanov combined to win
seven medals in 16U girls
swimming representing Detroit
last month at the JCC Maccabi
Games in Fort Lauderdale,
Florida.
Each medal was won in a
relay with swimmers from other
delegations. Alexandra won two
golds and two silvers. Megan
won two silvers and a bronze.
The girls did not swim together
on any relay team.
Besides being cousins, both
girls are 16 years old, live in
West Bloomfield, and are juniors
at Bloomfield Hills High School
and on the girls swim team
there.
Megan competed in the
2019 Maccabi Games in Detroit,
winning three bronze medals in
swimming relays. The Maccabi
Games were canceled in 2020
and 2021 because of the
COVID-19 pandemic and they
resumed last year, but with
many pandemic restrictions in
place.
“The Maccabi Games in
Detroit were amazing,” Megan
said. “I participated this year so
I could experience the Maccabi
Games one more time (before
she aged out). The best part
of my time in Fort Lauderdale
was meeting kids from all over
the world who have the same
interests as I do. I remember
meeting kids from Canada,
Mexico and Ukraine.”
